When IBM PC set the microcomputers, DOS ( Disk operating systems) became the most widely used microcomputer operating system. But today DOS has been replaced by more powerful operating system such as Windows, UNIX, Windows NT, LINUX. These operating systems make it possible to run tasks on less expensive microcomputer that were once performed on expensive mainframes minicomputers.
Microsoft Disk operating systems:
MS DOS , developed by Microsoft corporation and it became most standard machine designed with Intel processors. MS DOS was selected for IBM PC. This established the popularity of MS DOS . Since IBM hardware and its compatibles hold a large share of the microcomputer market. Now a days the IBM version of MS DOS is known as PC DOS.
Mac Operating system (Mac OS):
Mac OS introduced the graphical user interface bringing the UNIX ideas to microcomputer. In 1984 the original MAC OS was released. Which is consisted of System and Finder. By late late 1980’s the Mac operating system was the most technologically advanced in personal computing, but Apple computer was enable to capitalized on its lead and Mac OS fell behind Microsoft Windows.
Microsoft Windows 95, 98 and 2000:
Microsoft Windows 95 is operating system . It fully supports 32-bit processing capabilities. It also supports preemptive multitasking which means it enables the operating system to region control if an applications crashes. Windows 95 is an operating system which poised between Windows 3.XX and Windows NT . Windows 95 is designed to run many exiting application which run in 16-bit as well as 32 bit.
Windows 98, 2000 is an improved version of Win 95.
Linux:
Linux a new flavor of UNIX operating system. It is the fastest growing operating system for Intel based personal computers. Linux brings all the maturity and sophistication of UNIX to the PC including multitasking
, virtual memory , Internet support, multiprocessor support and graphical user interface Linux is daily gaining increasing acceptance for web and other applications.
